  1. What about the myth that the metal roof’s construction method (ie rafters or trusses, rigid insulation, air gap, and metal roof) is not going to be as to code or as durable as a traditional rafter plus OSB sheathing plus asphalt roof?

  2. I would like to see an on site demonstration of an actual house of a metal installation. Including all underlayment materials being installed with vents, ice and water, valleys, and all flashing including facia and gutter installation best practices. Standing on the ground talking is not helpful but a video of actual installers showing fasteners, caulking, and how all cutting is done to give a complete builder information and not just a material manufacturer’s advertisement. Thank you!

  3. I had a neighbor that had a red metal roof. It was a one-sided roof. Every afternoon when the sun started to go past it would blind me for about 20 minutes.
I just went in the back yard.

  4. My husband moved into our current house in 1974, it had a metal roof. Since that time it’s been resealed, had a couple panels replaced, and had the screws redone. I had lived all my life in a shingled roof house. I will never do that again. This roof has been tough as I could ask. We had trees come down all over the neighborhood and most people had trees inside their house. Our metal roof held up in spite of the fact that it shook the house when it came down, and we simply had to replace a couple panels and have it resealed. It was amazing. Because it was built so long aga, we do have a light sound when it rains hard but it’s not loud and I find it relaxing. Great video, blessings.

  5. Matt Risinger.. I wish you was in Florida. We are having issues with our metal roof. Has a leak somewhere. Been waiting a little over a month to get it fixed..

  6. Here in my area…the roofers sell it up as double the expense of asphalt. Drives me nuts. Dishonesty abounds in the big city

  7. I live in San Antonio TX. I have solar on house. House was 5 years old, hail storm damaged roof.

I wanted to replace with metal but HOA does not permit!

    I hate HOA.

  8. #1 fact about metal roof.
Its the only roof that stays on my house.

I have put many different roifs 9n my house. And all are blown off by my high winds.
3 years ago I put a corrugated metal roof on. And have had little problems.
Yes I had to screw on down after a windstorm once.
But thats nothing to the constant fixing I had to do before.
    And 3 years isn’t long.
But no roof before lasted a few months.
I will never use anything but metal for a roof here now.
Yes it cost a little more. But over time it much cheaper.
Oh it not just the wind. It’s also to heat and dry.
I think a Adobe tile would have worked also. But couldn’t find them in the number I needed. Which is saying something since my house is small.

  9. Lol. I don’t mind the noise of heavy rain ( monsoons) or hail, on my metal roof.
I admit the first hailstorm was nerve wacking. Remember for10 years I had been reroofing my house 3 to 10 times a year.
When it not only made it through that hail storm. But showed no sign of damage.
Now when I hear the clattering. I have a huge smile on my face.
And really it’s not that much louder.
Oh you talked of baseball hail.
I’ve had softball size hail hit my roof.
I don’t get a lot of rain. But when it rains it comes down.
I used screws with metal washers.
Those ones with rubber wouldn’t last a year here. The sun will destroy them.
My first roof was tar and rock. Never before have I seen a place that dries tar in months.

  10. I’ve installed double-locked standing seam roofs in Maine for many years. For our climate I think it is the best but is quite labor intensive, especially when dealing with valleys, skylights, etc.. If you add sealer to the seams and fabricate valleys with knuckles and sealer pockets it is essentially a membrane when finished which makes it the ultimate solution to winter ice dams which are a huge problem during winters up here. Exposed fasteners metal roofs will always have issues with screw failure no matter how carefull you are when torqeing the screw. Most common failure with them(other than spinning out) is ,because of metal expansion and contraction, the screws will literally unscrew themselves over a period of years. I kid you not , I have seem whole sections of roof with screws un wound from a1/8 to as much as 1/2 an inch. Love your comment about asphault shingle roof warranties, they are such a joke. Fibreglass shingles have had issues since they were first introduced and they haven’t fixed the issues yet and I doubt they ever will. Your lucky to get 15 years out of them regardless of warranty around here and every contactor I know has the same opinion. And we don’t even get the shingle destroying hot summers that southern climates get.

  11. Myth: Metal roofs last forever. At least that is how they were thought of at the East Broad Top railroad when they built the line… The station in Robertsdale PA had a bright red metal roof when I saw it the first times in the 90’s… It had been installed around 1900 or thereabouts. The Friends of the East Broad Top finally replaced that roof a couple of years ago… lasted about 100 years. Several other buildings in Robertsdale also have the metal roofs…but had more painting done on them. (the style they had required periodic painting to keep it in good shape.) The shops complex in Rock Hill Furnace PA also had a metal roof.. and portions of it had to be replaced recently. Amazing durability.

  12. You’re right, after the tornado finished with us, the only thing left was our metal roof.

  13. The most popular style of roofing material in Oz is the Custom Orb corrugated roofing in Colourbond finish. This profile is about 2 inches “deep” with each wave or corrugation about 3 inches from peak to peak. This is either nailed or Tek screwed to the roof structure.

  14. In Southern Florida metal roofs prove to meet Miami-Dade County and Broward County Hurricane Codes. I’ve seen great looking metal roofs that look like Mediterranean tile roofs and withstand 240 mph wind resistance.

  15. Alot of metal roof companies are selling garbage from china. That you cant even walk on while installing

  16. Metal roofs are not multiple decade…they are multiple century. Sheet aluminum does not rust or corrode at all and starting as electroplated painted metal, will never wear out, can be sprayed with paint every 30 years (optional if you want it to look even, but no one cares what there roof looks like, so not needed)

  17. Okinawa gets on average 7 typhoons per year. Sometimes what are called super typhoons or faster than 50m/s. In addition all kinds of flying debris can be expected. They use tile with little issues. However tile is heavy. Luckily Okinawa does not get many earthquakes. It is best to be able to walk on a roof to sweep after a typhoon. Can metal roofs withstand walking on? And what about the humidity? How about the solar reflectance?

  18. We had our roof replaced last year. We wanted metal. Our contractor does metal roofing but informed us they DO NOT do residential metal roofing even though they put residential style metal roofing on commercial buildings. Our insurance company told us if we did go metal, they would not insure the roof, even though they do insure the metal rooves on our outbuildings (farmstead). Strange world out here on the great plains. So we just went with the best impact resistant asphalt shingles we could buy.

  19. We got a metal roof over 3 years ago now. Its a lighter colour version of that slate style shown here, interlocking and strong.
Price wise it was less than double a cheap asphalt shingle roof.
Noise wise, its a bit odd. In the middle of the house, its quieter in a big storm, out right by a window? It is a bit louder, nothing to be concerned about.

    lifetime

  20. Some questions to those that got a metal roof:

    1. Do metal roofs reduce cost on the energy bill? That’s the claim I got from the salesman.
    2. Do Insurance companies have issue if the roof was not de shingled, I was told that the old shingles do not need to be taken off, cutting back on labor costs.
    3. Does it notably keep your house cooler?

I’m pretty much sold on a metal roof but some claims id like substantiated from the people.

  21. Tornado vs Metal Roof… what are the stats? a lot of homes failed to install a metal strap to the roof truss… the entire Roof pops off… sad but true. just a couple of nails kept it in place… Wow. probably 100+ nails or whatever… the overhang or eave lifts the entire roof assembly off… in high winds… even in a giant apartment building the wind speed going up the side of the building… tears away the flashing along the roof or the Chimneys Caps right off an Apartment building (flat roof… exhaust Pipes for gas Hot water tanks)… wild stuff.

  22. Cell phone and TV antenna don’t have a good reception when having metal roof. EMF signal is absorbed in the roof than in the phone and antenna.

  23. The metal roof on my house in Australia is nearly 60 years old and has withstood several tropical cyclones. At 7:27, it looks like there’s no protection on the edge of the roof that peeled up. On our roofs there’s a right angle piece of metal that covers the edge of the roof and the fascia and stops wind getting underneath like that.

  24. This was excellent! The 2 things I didn’t hear, in this video were * Extreme heat, yup I know Austin gets warm, I’m in Mesa, AZ (E Phoenix) where its routinely 105-120F during the summer. * OK for mobile/manufactured homes. Thanks a lot, Safe Travels!

  25. In Seattle area under tall trees, Cedar, Hemlock , Fir, Maple, Alder. Had Asphalt shingles three times, fighting moss and tree debris, never got 15 years out of “30 year” shingles, Installed aluminum shingles, still need to clean the roof at least twice a year. Cannot walk on it without pressure washing ahead of myself because the thin film of algae is slick as oil. Tree debris builds up below lower edge of shingle so have to pressure wash from side. When it rains we can here every drop. If it is raining hard (Seattle) you have to turn up the TV to hear the conversations. Not bad in the rooms with an attic over but half the house is cathedral ceiling and the rain is loud.

  26. Can standing seam zinc roof go directly on underlay on ply…..OR do you need to create a full cavity system?

  27. The worst downside of the metal roof is the lack of cell reception inside. Multiple Airbnb down south and most can’t get reception indoors.

  28. Hello, we’re I’m from in Australia we have more blinding problems from houses built on the hills behind our town as the sun in its passage reflects off very large windows these houses have to access the sea views in summer I can tell the time by the blinding reflection through the door of my workshop several times a day some of these are like welding flashes

  29. I’m going with stone coated steel shingles/panels to replace my 35 year old cedar shakes. 26 gauge new Zealand steel with an asphalt stone coating and then sprayed with a UV reflective clear coat. Class 4, Class A. Interlocking overlapping panels with 6 screws per panel, no exposed fasteners. Ridge vents to replace my box vents. Even has nice looking finished edging at the drip edge. Will cost about 20% more than a quality asphalt composition install. Will be a great selling point if/when I sell. Great curb appeal. The shingles have a thick edge profile and look really “beefy” like tiles.

  30. “metal roofs cause damp under tehmetal” I know it’s bad installation if that’s the case

  31. The real problem with metal roofs is the will outlast homeowner just as much as a good shingle so why spend the doe.

  32. Our house is 74 years old ( same age as I am ) and we put a metal roof on 4 years ago. People told me that I would not be able to sleep in the rain but we can’t really hearthe rain at all. Also this toof with the insulation membrane under it has made the 2 nd floor easier to heat and cool. I love the metal.

  33. Only question about solar is what to do if you don’t have a standing seam roof to install it on. Suppose you are using slate style metal shingles, how do you justify the comment about not having to place holes in the roofing?

  34. Make damn sure if you burn wood that it is well seasoned. (dry) The creosote that drips from the cap onto the roof is corrosive and WILL eat a nice hole right through that metal. Also, if your roof pitch is very steep and you live in snow country, the snow will be inclined to slide off in large sections leaving 4 ft. of snow in front of your front door. Kiss your gutters good by unless you install a snow stay system or gutter heaters. Metal has it’s place but it is NOT the answer to every roof.

  35. Metal roofs are the best. My family owns a roofing company in florida and after hurricane Katrina only metal roofs survived and to be honest those same roofs are still there today…. Katrina changed the building codes dramatically

  36. Most if not all metal roofs seam to fade out fairly quickly in around 5 to 8 years. And they start looking kind of bad then. I didn’t say all of them but a lots of them do . You see them all over the place.

  37. How long does the color of the roof last? Does it fade in way that it still looks good? Does it rust in spots?

  38. In Key West you can find many roofs made with highly decorative stamped galvanized steel tiles with amazing patterns, and some are well over 100 years old, weathered dozens of hurricanes, and are still healthy. If I ever get a home? I’m doing that.

  39. Americans need to look to other countries for metal roofing, it’s like you’re in your infancy in regards to metal roofing

  40. Been roofing for 25 years and run a successful business in the harsh Australian conditions.

Colorbond metal is the roof you want. Everything else is inferior.

  41. Question: Galvanized metal roofing in Hawaii is a lot more thick, ridgid, and heavy than roofing here in Florida that is very thin, flexible, and light weight. Do you know where in the mainland I can find the better quality metal roofing?

  42. I have a stamped metal roof and want to put up solar but my installer could not find anything for the type of metal roof that I have so did not feel comfortable doing the installation. Do you have a bracket or recommendation to install solar on a roof similar the panel at minute 4:50? (Similar to the Cedar Creek Shake that you showed). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Their has to be a way!!! Thank you.

  43. I own a 50 year old mobile home with a curved low slope roof. A previous owner put on metal roofing incorrectly so there are leaks. I’m planning on removing the cure roofing and changing to low slope pitched roof. I want to do metal roofing as I know asphalt shingles aren’t for low slope. Any suggestions?

  44. For many years, my husband and I enjoyed sitting on our front porch listening and watching our area’s summer rains. After Hurricane Florence hit our community in 2018, our next door neighbor installed a metal roof. Now when it rains, the rainfall hitting the neighbor’s roof is so loud, my husband and I have to yell at each other to be heard when out on the porch. Major joykill.

  45. I live in Michigan and we are getting a quote on a standing seam roof on our Cabin in Northern Michigan he insists on putting the new roof over the asphalt shingle roof that exists already is this a good idea.

  46. Live in SW Ohio where summer reach and stay at 90°F for 2 to 2 1/2 months and occasionally we get a foot of snow ( about every 3rd to 4th winter). The houses are old and have little to no insulation in them. My wife & I were living in an old house with little or no insulation with ancient shingles that went 35 years before leaking, and we needed a new roof. Found out that because the old shingles contained glass fibers or asbestos that if we wanted a new asphalt shingle roof to last and to remove possible hazards; we needed to remove all the shingles and then place the new roofing on. On the other hand, we could legally encase the old roofing in place and then install metal roofing on top of it. It was about $5000 less to install the metal roofing than asphalt shingles. Since the metal sits above the old roofing on wood slats and we have constant winds the heat was constantly removed the heat from the metal with the wind. We added foam insulation on the interior of the house under the roof only, and left the house walls insulationless. The house was well sealed from air infiltration but not from water vapors. Due to the open cell foam, there was no rain noise from the roof inside the house. The only noise heard from the roof was for people walking by the house during a rain shower. ( which are frequent in SW Ohio) The roofer mentioned that this noise would be present inside the house unless half inch thick foam panels were installed under the metal roof. ( we didn’t have any foam panels under our metal roof). The whole project of foaming the inside of the roof and adding the metal roof was about 2000 to $3000 less than installing only a new asphalt shingle roof. Most roofs in southern Ohio are being replaced with metal roofs. They also stand up to our every other summer storms with 90 mph winds extremely well and are guarrenteed to last 40 to 50 years before any rust appears. ( they appear to be lasting too) The steel siding is also guarrenteed for 40 to 50 years and now comes in many styles and variations so I resided the garage with a previous metal roof all in steel siding. Love steel roofing and siding. They are inexpensive and durable and are locally made which drastically reduced shipping costs for southern Ohio and the Ohio Valley. This project also significantly reduced our heating and AC bills (added about 5 inches of open cell spray foam under the roof & 1 to 1 1/2 inch of closed celled foam on our basement walls to 1 foot below our frost line for a few additional thousand dollars)

  47. Maybe it’s not an issue to urban/suburban dwellers. We’re rural and it’s a big issue. When we put a metal roof on the new 30’x12′ porch across the north side of the house (with plans to metal roof the house next year), our cell & internet signals dropped noticeably. Now there are only a few places we can put our phones in the house to receive calls, & must go outside to make calls – with metal roof only on the porch. Now plans are to remove it for something non-metal in the spring.

  48. Compared to a roof using shingles; will a metal roof rust/fail if it has a lot of build up of leaves and pine needles from lots of trees that surround the house?

  49. Adventure Rocks… (same ring, gotcha LOL) … love how you or your brother recommends this channel… How’s the RV undercarriage doing now ??? THE BUILD show, you ROCK 🙂

  50. your full of bologna 28 0r 28 gauge is THIN. Real roofers use 24 gauge Double Locked (rolled) Mechanically Fastened standing seam.

  51. Hi Matt,
Have you ever used or seen these IMP or insulated metal panel roofs being used on a residential construction project? Have you any videos relating to this type of construction? Thanks

  52. Although I have little experience with metal roofs, I have found it really scary when I have had to go on a metal roof that wasn’t low pitch. Is the slipperiness of metal roofs when walking on them also a myth?

  53. I love metal roofs, but I’m in central Florida and wondering how well it would hold up to hurricanes.

  54. Here’s one you may have never run into, or even considered. Is it possible to install a metal roof on a geodesic dome?

  55. It’s not the myths that get me. It’s how dangerous the snow/ ice buildup can be when homes are in close proximity. The chunks can easily destroy the adjacent home or even kill someone with no warning before they fall loose.

  56. You don’t need sub board sheets for metal roofs. Battens, insulation and metal.

  57. I recently found out that even with a metal roof, your home insurance company may stop or reduce coverage on your roof after 10 years. They may even cancel your policy if your roof is more than 20 years old, even if it’s metal. Our roof was a very expensive pressed metal, that mimics slate. A quality I don’t think you can even get today. Now we’re dealing with the insurance company threatening to pull our policy. We’ve never even made a claim. I’m shopping around new policies now, no way am I replacing my roof.

  58. I love a lot of your videos but I have to take issue with the “it’s not louder” claim. I have 3 different roof materials throughout our home: 24 gauge aluminum, stucco flat, and tile. The aluminum roof isn’t that much louder when inside because you are right insulation plays a huge role. But outside and in the areas *next* to the metal roof, you can hear the plinky plink (eg through windows especially).

  59. You forgot about one more thing….Metal is the number one cellular blocking material…Metal is the #1 cellular blocking material across all buildings in America. Aluminum, aluminum foil, lead, brass, copper, steel, iron, etc., can absorb and reflect cellular frequency waves. Average signal loss ranges from -32 dB to -50 dB, enough to make your building a dead zone.

  60. Thanks for all your info, it was very good. Did you put the rigid board insulation like 2” polyiso directly under the metal roof on your new house ? Thank you
